Yes. I. Did.

I had to stop by Candylicious today to pick up M&M’s in my brother’s wedding colors to make thank you favors for the couple’s shower we’re throwing this weekend and of course I somehow “accidentally” ended up at The Chocolate Bar as well :P

I picked up a slice of their Chocolate Tres Leches to take home and it was so. damn. gooood. I’m supposed to be saving Ben some, but between tonight and sometime tomorrow when I see him, I’m not 100% sure if that’s going to happen. Just being honest.

Also, the picture doesn’t do it justice. So I may just have to go back and get it again. You know, just for blogging’s sake ;)

If you’re ever in Houston, stop by both shops. They’re right next to each other! Thank me later.

Black and White Chocolate Chip Cookies

Nothing beats homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies! I just used a quick recipe from Betty Crocker and added a handful of white chocolate chips just for fun. It was delicious.

This is probably the only picture I have of me baking on my blog since I’m usually the one holding the camera. Ben took this while he was (impatiently) waiting for the cookies to be done. Thanks for letting me use your oven (and ingredients!) and for doing the dishes! :)

I loved being able to turn on the lights and watch how the cookies were turning out. Like I mentioned in my last post, I have a super old oven that you can’t even see through so this was definitely nice.

These cookies were gone in 60 seconds! I had to swat hands away just to try and get a few quick pictures.

Chocolate in every single bite = win.

And then there was one. Best believe there was a fight over the last cookie. Guess who won? ;)

White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Cookies

Man, that is one long name for a cookie. I found this idea from Baker Girl a while back but have never gotten around to it until the other day. I obviously haven’t been around lately, so I finally decided to just get in the kitchen and see what happens.

So organized. This almost never happens, so I thought I’d capture the moment while it lasted.

The recipe says to chill the dough for an hour or two (which I didn’t have) so I added about 1/2 cup of flour to help the dough stick better and not flatten out while baking.

I was paranoid about ruining the cookies that I had to peek every few minutes just to make sure. Since I have an old school oven with no glass windows or a light to see through, I had to crack it open slightly then shut it right away to keep the temperature. Always such a suspense and nerve-wracking process when I’m baking :X yikkess.

In the end, they all turned out okay! Such a good combination with the raspberries and white chocolate. It was sweet but not too much, and definitely a fun twist to the traditional White Chocolate Macadamia Nut.

Try these! You’ll love it. Enjoy!

Caramel Turtle Brownies. Haven’t baked in so long, I’m trying to get back on track. A boxed mix is a start.

I’m so sorry I haven’t been posting lately. In short, life, work and school has been kicking my butt and baking has been the last thing on my mind. Please bear with me and just know that this is temporary. I will get things back on track eventually.

Dessert Shops

I’m sure to those who read my posts on a regular basis, it’s obvious I’ve been in a baking slump for a while now. To be honest, there’s a lot of reasons for it but I’m not going to bore you with them.

The point is, I’m trying to get out of it. In my attempt to do so, I’ve been taking time alone to go dessert bar hopping around Houston in search of inspiration and ideas! (Not a bad deal, taste-testing through cupcakes, cakes, macarons, etc. but I might need to run several miles for all those calories! Ha!) It’s helped me a little bit, and I’d like to share a few photos with you all.

First stop: Sprinkles!

My best friend loves their cupcakes and I actually do as well! I’m typically not a big fan of cupcakes but theirs is never dry, always so flavorful and the frosting is the perfect amount in proportion to cake. I tried the Dark Chocolate and Chocolate Marshmallow (which had marshmallow fluff inside!) Yummy.

Do you know how much self-control it takes to not indulge in these cupcakes and get good pictures? The same day, I stopped by William’s Sonoma right next to Sprinkles to browse through their cookware and baking tools. They always have the coolest stuff but mostly out of my budget! One day though, I will treat myself to a shopping spree in that store. I did settle for candy though.

Next, I went to Central Market’s Pastry Department. I bought a Mango Mousse Cake for Ben’s family, and the lady was even nice enough to let me sample a small slice before buying it. I don’t have a picture, but I liked it because it had that mango sweetness as opposed to sugary sweetness. It was smooth, moist and simple. I wish I took a picture, the cake was small but looked very elegant. Here are a few of their displays though:

Cupcakes, macarons! I sampled a Neopolitan selection of Strawberry, Vanilla and Chocolate. My mom liked them too, and she’s not much of a dessert person.

Their Easter display and fruit tarts.

All their beautiful cakes! I wanted to buy every.single. one.

One day I’ll try to recreate these.

Last stop: Dolce Delights
It’s a fairly new pastry shop, not even a few months old. I stopped by the third day they opened and had a Tiramisu Cake Truffle. It was okay to be honest, but nothing special. I wanted to stop by again though and try the other pastries.

This time I had a White Chocolate Passion Fruit Mousse Cake and a box of Macarons.

I enjoyed the cake a lot. When I spoke to Candace (the owner) the first time I went, she mentioned how her goal was to make pastries using natural fruit flavors to keep the sweetness from overpowering the taste. I could definitely taste what she meant. The white chocolate mousse was the perfect base to go with the tartness of the fruit. The tiny tapioca looking things popped and bursted juice, which I wasn’t expecting since I thought it would be chewy. I asked what they were called but I can’t remember what the name was. It definitely wasn’t tapioca though.

As far as the Macarons, I can’t say it was better than the ones I had from Central Market. They were a bit hard, and crumbled when you took a bite (which I heard shouldn’t happen to good Macarons) but either way, I liked them! I know it can be a difficult process to make, so I’m not judging too harshly. The flavors were supposed to be Lavender, Strawberry, Orange and I think Almond and Pistachio. I think it could’ve used a bit more flavor as well since they were so subtle I wouldn’t have been able to tell what flavors they were if I hadn’t been told ahead of time.

Don’t they look so pretty though?

I was able to take a few pictures of the place as well and I like how clean and contemporary it is. The fresh flowers on each table was also a nice touch! It was pretty but not girly and a good spot for dessert after a dinner date. They also serve coffee and teas as well. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to maybe sell wines either to pair with the desserts. I’d love to go visit a shop that does this. If you know of any in Houston or Katy, let me know!

Overall, it’s definitely a place I would visit again and take friends to. If you live in Houston or if you ever happen to visit, take the time to stop by! I’m sure you’d all enjoy it as much as I did.

Next time, I want to do a post on my favorite coffee shop in Midtown and a few others I’ve been meaning to visit. So stay posted if you’re interested!

P.S. I did NOT consume all of this in one day in case you were wondering! Haha.

Hope you guys enjoyed this post! Which ones were your favorite? Where do you like to go for desserts in your town? Please share! Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be lucky enough to travel and discover other great places outside of Texas. I’m always happy to read your comments!

Snickerdoodle Cookies

Such a funny, random name. I love Snickerdoodles. I’d choose these over Sugar Cookies any day. Actually, that’s probably a lie. I just get tired of Sugar Cookies easily.

The recipe I have for these cookies makes about 3 dozen, so I like it since there’s plenty to go around. I think I may have added too much flour when I made them the other day though, so I’m probably gonna have to change it a little bit before posting a recipe.

Enjoy this with milk or coffee. The cinnamon and sugar combination in these babies are addicting!

Banana Nutella Crepes

Yup. I went there. Next stop? Pancakes! The journey of Nutella-anything will never end. It’s just that good.

So far, I’ve managed to make Nutella Cupcakes, Nutella Mousse and Nutella Brownies. I’m sure the list won’t stop there.

Anyway, there’s this awesome place my best friend took me to that serves crepes (sweet and savory) plus gelatos, paninis and good coffee (their White Mocha is just as good as Starbucks’ I tell you.) It’s a small place but definitely worth trying. Come visit if you’re ever in Houston! (Try the Smoked Salmon Panini, Smoked Salmon Crepe and the Morrocan Sausage.. so good!) Check out the menu at Coco’s Crepes and Coffee if you want ideas.

Here’s a basic recipe if you wanna try it. The great thing about crepes is you can make it however you want whether its for breakfast, lunch or dessert. Have fun!

Also, since I haven’t been in the kitchen lately I’ve been trying out dessert places around Houston and trying to get ideas, inspiration, etc. I’ll try to do a different post on that soon. And hello to my new followers! :) Thanks for reading the blog, even if I haven’t been posting much lately. Will try to get things going again and get out of this baking slump I’m in. Please feel free to suggest ideas, requests or just to leave a comment. Stay posted!
